R.D. Blackmore's 1869 romance "Lorna Doone" is a forbidden love story involving lovers from feuding Scottish clans. It is likely that Lorna Doone cookies (1912) were named soley to capitalize on the popularity of the character (who, admittedly is a badass because she outfoxed her arranged marriage and also survived a gunshot).

Look, I don't know anything about international trademark law of the earlier 20th century, but this feels like if I started a band and called it "Spiderman".

For crossword composers, DOONE gives us another out for two Os in a row.
